MODEL RESPONSEBand 7+ informal letter

Hi John,

I hope you’re doing well. I’m writing to let you know that I’ll be moving back to India next month, and I’d love to give you some of my furniture before I leave.

I have a wooden dining table with four matching chairs that I won’t be able to take with me. Since you recently moved into a larger apartment, I thought you might make good use of it rather than me selling it.

The set is about two years old, but it’s still in excellent condition. The table is made of solid wood and is large enough to seat four people comfortably. The chairs have grey cushioned seats, so they’re quite comfortable even for long dinners. There are a couple of minor scratches on one corner of the table, but they’re hardly noticeable. I originally paid around $600 for the set, and I think it would fit nicely in your dining area.

My flight to India is booked for September 10 at 9:30 a.m. from Sydney Airport, so it would be great if you could collect the furniture by September 7. I’ll be home after 5 p.m. during the week. Would Saturday evening work for you? As the table is fairly large, you’ll probably need to borrow or hire a small van. I can remove the table legs beforehand, which should make it much easier to transport.

Let me know what works best for you. I’d be really happy to know the furniture is going to a good home.

Best wishes,
Jas

MODEL RESPONSEBand 7+ informal apology

Hi John,

I hope you’re doing well. I’m writing about the camera I borrowed from you last weekend. Unfortunately, it got damaged while I was using it, and I’m really sorry about what happened.

As you might remember, I borrowed your Canon digital camera on Saturday to take photographs at my sister’s birthday party. I needed a good-quality camera because we had planned an outdoor celebration, and I wanted to capture some memorable moments with my family.

Unfortunately, while I was taking pictures in the garden, I placed the camera on a small table. One of the children accidentally knocked into the table, causing the camera to fall onto the ground. Although the screen is still working, there is a crack on the lens, and the camera is no longer focusing properly. Can you believe it happened just before we cut the birthday cake? I felt terrible as soon as I realised what had happened.

I’m extremely sorry for damaging something that you trusted me with. I’ve already contacted an authorized repair centre, and I’m taking the camera there tomorrow morning. I’ll cover the full cost of the repair, and if the lens cannot be fixed, I’ll pay for a replacement. I’ll return it to you as soon as it’s back in perfect working condition.

I hope you can forgive me, and I really appreciate your understanding.

Best wishes,
Jas

  • Thank your teacher for his cooperation and support.
  • Explain why you had to leave the course early.
  • Describe what you liked about his lectures.

MODEL RESPONSE Band 7+ formal letter

Dear Mr. Wilson,

I’m writing to thank you for all the support and cooperation you provided during my Business Communication course in Australia. I’m especially grateful for your understanding when I had to leave the course unexpectedly.

Unfortunately, I had to return to Canada before completing the programme because of an urgent family matter. My father had an accident and needed my assistance at home. As soon as I received the news, I booked the earliest available flight to Vancouver. I really appreciate the way you helped me collect the course materials and explained how I could continue studying after returning home.

What I enjoyed most about your lectures was your practical approach to teaching. Instead of simply explaining concepts from the textbook, you used real workplace situations and encouraged us to participate in group discussions. The presentation activities were particularly useful because they helped me become more confident when speaking in front of others. Would it be possible for you to recommend some additional material that I could use to continue practising at home?

Thank you once again for making the course such a valuable experience. I hope I’ll have an opportunity to complete the remaining classes in the future.

Kind regards,
John Smith

MODEL RESPONSE Band 7+ formal enquiry

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to enquire about renting your community hall for a weekly dance club that my friends and I are planning to start next month.

There are around 15 of us who are interested in learning and practising Bollywood and Punjabi folk dance. We plan to meet once a week to learn new dance routines and practise together. Our main aim is to prepare performances for local cultural events and the annual multicultural festival in our community. We also expect a few more members to join once the club is established.

Could you please let me know whether the hall is available for regular weekly bookings? I would also appreciate information about the rental fee, payment method and cancellation policy. In addition, could you confirm whether the tables and chairs can be moved to create enough space for dancing?

We would like to use the hall every Saturday from September 5 to December 19, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. If this time is unavailable, we would be happy to consider another evening slot.

I look forward to hearing from you and would appreciate further information about the booking procedure.

Yours faithfully,
John Smith

05 FORMAL COMPLAINT Dirty Street and Waste Problems Write to your local council View task & model answer +
WRITING TASK

The street where you live has become very dirty.

Write a letter to your local council. In your letter:
  • Describe the causes of the problem.
  • Explain how it is affecting people who live there.
  • Suggest some ways to deal with the problem.
Word requirement Write at least 150 words.
Planning focus Introduce the concern → Explain the causes → Describe the effects on residents → Recommend practical council action
MODEL RESPONSE Band 7+ formal complaint

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to raise a concern about the increasing amount of rubbish on Green Street, where I have lived for the past three years.

The main cause appears to be the lack of public garbage bins along the street. As there are few places to dispose of waste, people often leave food packaging, plastic bottles and other rubbish on the roadside. The problem is made worse by irregular garbage collection, which means the waste sometimes remains there for several days.

This situation is affecting local residents in several ways. Firstly, the accumulated rubbish creates an unpleasant smell and attracts flies and other insects, particularly during warm weather. This may create health concerns, especially for families with young children who regularly play outside. Moreover, rubbish scattered across the pavement can make it difficult for pedestrians to walk safely, particularly elderly people and parents with strollers.

I would suggest installing additional garbage bins at suitable locations and arranging a regular collection schedule. The council could also put up signs reminding residents to dispose of their waste responsibly.

I would appreciate it if the council could take action to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,
John Smith

06 FORMAL COMPLAINT Problems at a Sports Club Write to the club manager View task & model answer +
WRITING TASK

You have recently joined a sports club, but you are experiencing some problems.

Write a letter to the club manager. In your letter:
  • Explain why you joined the club.
  • Describe the problems you are experiencing.
  • Suggest some solutions to fix them.
Word requirement Write at least 150 words.
Planning focus Reason for joining → Swimming-class problem → Gym-equipment problem → Specific solutions for each issue
MODEL RESPONSE Band 7+ formal complaint

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about a few problems I have experienced since joining Greenfield Sports Club two weeks ago.

I joined the club mainly to improve my fitness and learn how to swim. I was particularly interested in the beginner swimming classes advertised on your website, as I have never received professional swimming lessons before. I also planned to use the gym regularly after work.

Unfortunately, I have encountered two problems. Firstly, the beginner swimming classes are often overcrowded, which makes it difficult for the instructor to give enough individual attention to new learners. Moreover, several treadmills and exercise bikes in the gym are frequently out of order, resulting in long waiting times during busy evening hours.

I would suggest limiting the number of participants in each beginner swimming class so that everyone can receive proper guidance. In addition, the faulty gym equipment should be repaired and checked regularly to ensure that enough machines are available for members.

I would appreciate it if you could look into these issues and take the necessary action.

Yours faithfully,
John Smith
