Some people believe that children should regularly help with household chores, while others think they should focus mainly on their studies. Although concentrating on education can help children achieve better academic results, I believe that taking part in household tasks is equally important because it develops responsibility and independence.
On the one hand, focusing mainly on education can allow children to perform better academically. School students often have demanding schedules involving classes, homework and examinations. If they are given too many household duties, they may have less time to revise and complete assignments. As a result, their academic performance could be affected.
For example, a Grade 12 student preparing for final examinations may need several hours each evening to study. Expecting this student to cook dinner and clean the house regularly could place additional pressure on them and reduce their study time. On the other hand, household responsibilities can help children develop essential life skills. Simple duties such as preparing meals, washing dishes and organizing their rooms teach them to take responsibility for their surroundings.
Moreover, these skills can make them more independent when they eventually leave home. For instance, a teenager who regularly helps prepare family meals is more likely to be able to cook independently when moving away for university. Therefore, reasonable household duties can prepare children for adulthood without interfering with their education. In conclusion, while academic study deserves considerable attention, I believe children should also have age-appropriate responsibilities because these help them become independent and responsible adults.
